Material tests for product safety 🧐

Because the lamps are electrical housings, it must be ensured that they comply with the prescribed standards. The results are that PP & HDPE can both be used for the lamps! ♻️💡

The first test is the "Glow wire test"
(IEC 60695-2-11: 2000) 🔥
-Glow wire for 30s (550°C, 750°C)
-Does it burn?
-If it burns, it must be extinguished within 60s
-Only HDPE, started to burn briefly at 750°C, went out again after 8s.
Result for Johannplasto:
-> PP & HDPE are suitable as electrical housings; components carrying electrical current can even be mounted directly on PP.

The second test is the "Ball pressuere test"
(IEC 60695-10-2: 2003) 🔬
-The samples are heated in an oven
(1: 75°C, 2: 125°C)
-Test weight with ball point according to the standard on the sample
-1 hour test time (sample cools down during this time)
-The impression diameter is measured
Result for Johannplasto:
-> Diameter at 75°C below 2mm: Suitable for electrical housings (HDPE).
-> Diameter at 125°C below 2mm: even suitable for components carrying electrical current (PP).

The third test is the device test according to DIN VDE 0701 🔌
-Visual inspection
-Measurement of the insulation resistance:> 2MOhm

So many defective electrical devices still have good cables that I can use for my lamps. 💡
After assembly, all lamps with cables from electronic scrap are tested according to the standard (DIN VDE 0701). 🧐

Step 2: Shredding

The basis for the most plastic recycling processes is shredding the sorted plastic waste into small granulate. The Johannplasto shredder can shred plastic waste up to a thickness of 5mm, does its job very quietly and lets rain up to 5kg of plastic granulate (5 or 8mm) per hour. 💪
It was a nice journey to build this machine, big thanks to my brother @stefanpeterberns who made the electronics inside the box and to the PreciousPlastic-Community @realpreciousplastic for inspiration and help!

The e-waste problem:

Mining Copper – Chile: high water consumption, natural damage.

Mining Tantalum & Cobalt – Congo: slave labor.

Mining Tin – Indonesia: Soap deposits: Floating destroys coral reefs, fish and soils, deaths from landslides.

Mining Rare earths: dysprosium, neodymium, praseodymium, yttrium: High energy consumption to get them out of the minerals.

Manufacturing: The working conditions in the manufacturing companies are inhumane (Child labor, extremely high work pressure, suicides).

Short lifespan of most electronic devices (Average duration of smartphones: 2,5 years, 1,4 billions smartphones per year).

Only about 10% gets recycled.

Most electronic waste is exported where it is a massive threat to people and the environment.

E-waste is the world's largest growing garbage dump: 50 million tons in 2018 worldwide, increasing every year.

Plastic pollution problem:

In the last 10 years we have made more plastics than we did in the last 100 years.

Half of those plastic products are single-use plastics.

About 10 million tons of plastic is dumped into world's oceans every year.

Over 80 percent of ocean plastic comes from the land (Dumps->Rivers->Ocean)

Fish and birds takes small pieces of plastic and microplastics directly, with mostly serious consequences.

The ratio of microplastic to plankton is already about 1:2.

Worldwide we recycle less than 15%.
